Do you need a prescription for an EpiPen for severe allergic reactions?
An EpiPen is an auto-injectable device that delivers a dose of epinephrine (adrenaline) to treat severe allergic reactions, also known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can be life-threatening and requires immediate treatment.
Who needs an EpiPen?
EpiPens are prescribed for people with a history of severe allergic reactions to allergens such as insect stings, foods (peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish), medications, or latex.
How does an EpiPen work?
Epinephrine helps to counteract the symptoms of anaphylaxis by constricting blood vessels, reducing swelling, and relaxing the airways to improve breathing.

EpiPen prescriptions are available through Chat-visit for patients who meet the eligibility criteria.
Note: EpiPens are brand-name medications. Generic epinephrine auto-injectors may also be available.
Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, wheezing, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.
EpiPens typically expire after 12-18 months. Check the expiration date regularly and replace expired devices.
Store your EpiPen at room temperature, away from extreme heat or cold. Don't store it in the car or in direct sunlight.
Inject the EpiPen into the outer thigh muscle, through clothing if necessary. Hold it in place for 3 seconds and then remove it. Seek immediate medical attention after using an EpiPen.
It's not recommended to use an expired EpiPen as its effectiveness may be reduced.
Seek immediate medical attention, even if you don't experience any symptoms.
Most visits cost $49 between 7 am and 9 pm 7 days (Mon-Sun).
