What is Syphilis?
Syphilis can start as an ulcer somewhere on the skin or on the lining of the genital area. It is an infection that can, in its late stages, cause damage to the heart, brain and spinal cord.

How do you get Syphilis?
You can get syphilis through unprotected (no condom) vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has the infection. It is also spread by close contact. It can be spread from mother to baby through the placenta during pregnancy.

How do you know you have Syphilis?
A painless ulcer, called a chancre, usually on the genitals. In its second stage a rash and maybe other symptoms. Click here for images of Syphilis.

Can you treat Syphilis?
Syphilis is treated with antibiotics.

Will my partner/s be affected?
Partners must be tested and treated. The best advice is not to have sex until both you and your partner/s have had treatment.

Check out our post on Syphilis > Here we talk about the history of Syphilis, its symptoms, the progression of the disease, and how to treat it.

  • You should test at 6-weeks from a particular event or unprotected sex.
  • If you've tested positive previously for Syphilis and have received treatment, you should retest for Syphilis 2-weeks after treatment.

  • You’re planning to have a baby, or you are pregnant, and you want to be sure Syphilis has not gone undetected.
  • You're worried about a particular event.
  • You’ve recently started your relationship and want to be sure that past events do not put it at risk.
  • You simply want to be safe rather than sorry.
Health professionals in New Zealand are warning of a current Syphilis epidemic. New Zealand babies are dying from syphilis passed on from their mothers during pregnancy.

Syphilis is destructive, ravaging the body entirely, and rendering its victim brain dead. If detected early enough, Syphilis can be treated with simple antibiotics.

We want you to remain in control of your sexual health! So, get tested on the regular, don’t leave it up to chance.
Please note: Our tests have varying recommended test times. Please see here for suggested times for testing.
