Chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infection (STI) in New Zealand. It affects both men and women. Most people that have chlamydia don't show any symptoms, but can still infect other people. Chlamydia can be easily treated with antibiotics. Left untreated, chlamydia can cause infertility.
WHEN TO TEST
The average incubation period for Chlamydia is 1 to 5 days. If you get tested before this time has elapsed, it is recommended that you test again to confirm your results once the incubation period has passed.
WHEN YOU MIGHT USE
- You’re planning to have a baby, or you are pregnant, and you want to be sure an STI has not gone undetected.
- You're worried about a particular event.
- You’ve recently started your relationship and want to be sure that past events do not put it at risk.
- You simply want to be safe rather than sorry.
In New Zealand, it is estimated that Chlamydia infects up to 1-in-3 women and 1-in-5 men up to the age of 38. Most often, you will not have symptoms. If left untreated, Chlamydia can damage your fertility.
