The One Night Stand

The One Night Stand

May 13, 2018

It’s not every day we decide to live by the words “go hard or go home” when it comes to slamming back a few cold ones. But when we do, as many know, the outcome never ceases to surprise. In the words of Mike Tyson, “we all do dumb shit when we’re f#@ked up.”

Sex has been keeping humans from going extinct since the very beginning of humanity. Alcohol, once known as Aqua Vitae (‘water of life’) has dated back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. So, if both have coexisted for hundreds of years why is the combination of the two still pose such a big risk these days?

Sexually transmitted infections. It’s as simple as that.

Alcohol is a depressant, which means it slows down the brain, lowers inhibitions, and stimulates arousal creating a sense of ecstasy that provokes risky sexual behaviours, such as unprotected sex on a one-night stand. A higher likelihood of participating in unprotected sex equates to a higher likelihood of contracting or spreading an STI.

A study on “the relationship between recent alcohol use and sexual behaviours” published by the US National Library of Medicine1 concluded that of the 671 STI clinic patients studied, binge drinking was reported in 30% of women and 42% of men. Among the 30% of women, Gonorrhoea was nearly 5 times higher compared to women abstainers1. That’s not even the half of it! Men had nearly three times the rate of gonorrhoea to women. This merely highlights only one of the 20 different infections that are known to be sexually transmitted through sexual contact2. So maybe it’s in our best interests to use protection, but that’s the dilemma we’re faced with when 8 tequila shots down, we act on impulse.

Now don’t get me wrong, we all love a cheeky night out after a long week, but all I’m saying is if you’re going to go hard and you find yourself sleeping with someone at least play it safe, even with protection. So, do yourself and your next sexual partner a favour and get checked.  Better safe than sorry.
