UTI’s - painful, annoying, and a disruption to your life. If you haven’t had one yet, chances are you know someone who has.
Well, medical science has recently delivered some good news. Cue the collective sigh of relief for those of us who suffer recurrent UTIs.
The possible solution to help prevent a UTI is more simple than you might think. It’s sugar-free, gluten-free, fat-free, both vegan and keto-friendly and can be used with any diet or fitness program and it’s (mostly) just plain-old free. It’s WATER!
A study published in October 2018 found that drinking more water daily led to fewer UTIs and less need for antibiotics.
The study was conducted across 140 premenopausal women who experienced three or more episodes of cystitis (a bladder infection or UTI) in one year and reported that they drank less than 1.5 litres of fluids daily.
The study discovered that women who drank an additional 1.5 litres of water had 50% fewer episodes of recurrent cystitis, and required fewer antibiotics than women who did not drink additional fluid.
The Institute of Medicine recommends that women have 2.2 litres daily. Not all of this needs to come just from water — or even fluids. Fruits and vegetables, which are part of a healthy diet, contain a lot of water.
It has often been suggested that substances in cranberry juice can decrease the risk of urinary tract infection, but no study has ever conclusively determined this.
So the good-old natural king-of-wetness (water that is) may be the best means to both increase hydration and reduce the chances of a UTI.
But before you rush to a fridge for that chilled bottle of convenience - save your bucks and just fill your own bottle, and save a planet a little bit while you’re at it.
If you’re a woman with symptoms of cystitis (a UTI), such as pain or burning with urination, increased urgency and frequency, try to drink more fluids, but also make an appointment with your doctor and get checked.
If you’re like most of us and don’t like making appointments or waiting, consider buying one of our simple at-home UTI Test Kits. We’ll deliver it to you so you have it handy to test the moment you think you might have a UTI. It’s easy to use - just pee on a test stick (there’s three of them in the box) - and video chat with our doctors online immediately (no appointment needed). If it turns out you need treatment, we’ll courier it to your door, or have it ready for same-day pickup at your nearest pharmacy. Easy!
Better still, going forward, you may be able to decrease the chance that you’ll develop an infection by drinking more water daily. It’s a simple solution readily available for prevention — and now supported by evidence!
